What is microchipping?
Chips for identification are the most reliable way of reuniting lost pets with their owners and for proving ownership of an animal. The procedure for injecting a microchip is safe, fast and inexpensive.

Why should I microchip my pets?
Apart from the already stated benefits, implanting a microchip is required by Bulgarian law. If you are stopped and checked by authorities and no chip is found, then you can be served a fine.
Additionally, a microchip is necessary for your pet to travel abroad.
When do I need to put the microchip?
Some owners think that since their pet doesn’t leave the house they do not need a microchip. In our experience that has proven to be the complete opposite. These types of animals are most susceptible to getting lost if they happen to wander outside. That’s why we recommend putting a microchip on all pets.
All animals should have a chip by the time they reach 4 months of age or within 7 days of you receiving ownership of them.
How do microchips work?
The microchip (a sterile capsule the size of a rice grain) is injected under the skin to the left of your pet’s neck and stays there for the rest of their life. The chip itself does not emit any waves or signals – the only information it contains is a 15-digit identification number. This number, together with your contact information and information about the dog are registered in a veterinary database ran by the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA) and the Municipality.
If a dog is found, it can be scanned at any clinic with a special reader. Once a microchip is found, the identification number is checked in the national database and the owner is informed and told where to pick up his pet.
